Maya was a child born out of rape who overcame poverty and prejudice to become a celebrated poet and civil rights activist. She also wrote plays, movies and television shows over her 50 year career. She's received dozens of awards and 50 honorary degrees. She wrote an inauguration poem at the request of President Elect Bill Clinton in 1992.
